Virgin Voyages onboard credit — Sailor Loot, in Virgin’s cheerful dialect — is the closest thing cruising has to found money: dollars that appear on your account and spend like cash on drinks, spa days, shore adventures, and yes, tattoos. The catch is that Virgin never puts all the ways to get it in one place. There are six routes, they have different rules, and most of them stack — which means Sailors who know the full map routinely board with hundreds more to spend than Sailors who don’t.

1. My Next Virgin Voyage (MNVV): The $150 Certificate That Pays Twice

The single best onboard-credit deal Virgin offers, full stop. While you’re on a sailing (or shortly after — see the post-voyage window), you can place a $150 deposit toward a future voyage. That certificate pays you twice: a fare discount AND matching Sailor Loot, scaled by the length of the future sailing:

The fine print that matters: the certificate is valid for sailings departing within 24 months of the deposit, the $150 counts toward your future booking’s deposit (it’s not an extra fee), and it combines with most promotions. You can buy one onboard and have it applied to a booking we manage — but know the hard rule: an MNVV never combines with First Mate bonus credit. Nearly all current MNVVs are the $150 version; older $300-deposit certificates (purchased before January 22, 2025) mostly live on as legacy paper. 2. First Mate Bonus Credit: The Route Most Sailors Never Collect

Virgin Voyages First Mates — its travel agents — can add bonus onboard credit to the bookings they manage. Longer voyage, bigger credit — and two pieces of honest fine print: book 120+ days out and it’s simply there (inside that window, it’s not something we can promise), and this bonus never combines with an MNVV certificate.

It costs you nothing extra. Your fare is identical whether you book direct with Virgin or through a First Mate. Booking direct doesn’t save you that money; it just means nobody adds credit on top (and nobody’s watching your fare for price drops). 3. Sailor Loot: What Onboard Credit Actually Buys

All roads lead here: Sailor Loot is what onboard credit is called once it lands on your account. Onboard, it spends nearly everywhere — specialty drinks, spa treatments, retail, Shore Things booked while sailing, the tattoo parlor. You can also buy Sailor Loot outright pre-cruise as a gift or budgeting tool.

4. Bar Tab Bonus Tiers: Free Money for Drinks You’d Buy Anyway

Virgin has no drink packages — you pay as you go, or you pre-load a Bar Tab. Pre-purchase one at least 24 hours before sailing and Virgin adds bonus credit by tier. As of publication (verify before you buy): $200 gets +$25, $300 gets +$50, $500 gets +$100, $750 gets +$175, and $1,000 gets +$250 — up to 25% free. Sailing Club status can boost certain tiers further, and Virgin periodically runs Bar Tab promotions that stack on top.

5. The Premium Fare’s Included Bar Tab

Under Virgin’s VoyageFair Choices structure, the Premium fare includes a Bar Tab of $15 per Sailor per night — on a 7-night sailing for two, that’s $210 of drink credit built into the fare, alongside Premium’s bigger perks (60-day dining window, streaming WiFi, maximum flexibility). 6. The 14-Day Post-Voyage Window: The Second Chance

Walked off the ship without buying an MNVV? You’re not done. A version of the offer remains available for 14 days after disembarkation — same $150 deposit that counts toward your future booking, same matching onboard credit. The difference: the post-voyage version does not include the fare discount. That piece is reserved for deposits placed onboard.
