Which Virgin Voyages Fare Type Should You Pick: Base, Essential, or Premium?
Your Gold Tier First Mate’s Definitive Guide to Virgin Voyages’ New Fare System — With an Interactive Calculator to Find Your Perfect Match
📋 What’s Inside This Guide
On October 7, 2025, Virgin Voyages fundamentally changed how you book your voyage. Gone is the single, one-size-fits-all fare. In its place: VoyageFair Choices — a three-tier system offering Base, Essential, and Premium fare options for Sea Terrace cabins and below.
As a Gold Tier First Mate and Top 100 First Mate in North America for 2025, I’ve spent countless hours dissecting this new system. And I’ll be direct with you: not all fare types are created equal. While the Base fare might tempt you with its lower price tag, the restrictions could turn your dream voyage into a stressful experience.
Let me walk you through exactly what each fare type includes, what it restricts, and — most importantly — which one is right for your specific travel style.
Understanding VoyageFair Choices: The Airline-Style Revolution
If you’ve booked a flight in the past decade, you already understand the concept. Virgin Voyages has adopted a tiered pricing model similar to what you see on airlines like Delta or United — or their sister company, Virgin Atlantic. The philosophy is simple: flexibility and perks cost extra.
Here’s what CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said about the change: the new system was designed to give Sailors better price transparency, make fares easier to compare across the industry, and respond to Sailors’ and advisors’ call for more choice.
The crucial detail that many Sailors miss: gratuities are now a separate line item. They’re no longer bundled into your fare. You can prepay at $20 per person per night or pay onboard at $22. This is a significant change from Virgin’s previous “all-inclusive” positioning, and it’s essential to factor this into your budget calculations.
🎉 What’s STILL Included in ALL Fare Types
Regardless of which fare you choose, Virgin Voyages’ signature inclusions remain. Every fare delivers more than $1,000 in value:
- ✨ All 20+ dining venues — no specialty restaurant fees
- ✨ Essential beverages — filtered still & sparkling water, sodas, drip coffee, basic teas, non-pressed juices
- ✨ WiFi — level varies by fare type
- ✨ Group fitness classes — yoga, meditation, cycling, HIIT, and more
- ✨ All entertainment — shows, parties, live music, The Red Room performances
- ✨ Award-winning adults-only atmosphere — no kids, ever

Base Fare: The Value-Driven Gamble
Who It’s For
Base is designed for Sailors who are absolutely certain about their travel plans. You must be 100% committed to your dates, your cabin, and your travel companions. There is no wiggle room.
What You Get
- ✨ Basic WiFi — One device per Sailor. Suitable for social media, messaging, and light browsing only. No streaming, no video calls.
- ✨ 15-day dining reservation window — You can book restaurants just 15 days before sailing. That’s a critical limitation.
- ✨ Cabin selection at booking — You can choose your preferred cabin when you book, just like Essential and Premium fares.
What You Lose
⚠️ Critical Base Fare Restrictions
- ❌ Non-refundable — Cancel for any reason and you lose everything.
- ❌ No date changes — Life happens, but with Base, you’re locked in.
- ❌ No name changes — Travel partner has to cancel? You can’t swap them out.
- ❌ No cabin changes after booking — Once you book, you cannot request a different cabin.
- ❌ Cabin subject to reassignment — While you can select your cabin at booking, Virgin Voyages reserves the right to reassign you to a different cabin up to 7 days before sailing for operational reasons. You’ll be moved to a comparable or better cabin, but it’s a risk to consider.
- ❌ Not eligible for price protection/adjustments
💡 Understanding Base Fare Cabin Reassignment
Here’s the key nuance many Sailors miss: with Base fare, you can select your preferred cabin at the time of booking — you’re not assigned a random cabin. However, unlike Essential and Premium fares where your cabin is locked in, Virgin Voyages retains the right to move you to a different cabin up to 7 days before your voyage. If this happens, you’ll be placed in a cabin of equal or better category, but you might lose that perfect mid-ship location or connecting cabin you carefully selected. For many Sailors, this uncertainty alone makes Essential worth the upgrade.
The 15-Day Dining Window Problem
Let me explain why this is such a significant issue. On Virgin Voyages, dining is not just about food — it’s an experience. Restaurants like The Wake (steakhouse with ocean views), Pink Agave (upscale Mexican), and Extra Virgin (Italian) are phenomenally popular.
With Premium Sailors booking at 60 days, Essential at 45 days, and RockStar guests at 120 days, by the time your 15-day window opens, prime dining times may already be gone. You might be eating at 5:30 PM or 9:30 PM instead of a civilized 7 PM.

Essential Fare: The Familiar Favorite
Who It’s For
Essential is the standard VoyageFair Choice — closest to what Virgin offered before the change. Virgin Voyages predicts 60-70% of Sailors will choose Essential. It’s the sweet spot for most travelers who want flexibility without premium pricing.
What You Get
- ✨ Classic WiFi — One device per Sailor. Faster browsing and WiFi audio calling. Solid for most usage.
- ✨ 45-day dining reservation window — Much more reasonable. You can actually plan your meals.
- ✨ Cabin confirmed and guaranteed at booking — Your selected cabin is locked in and won’t be changed by Virgin Voyages.
- ✨ Cabin changes allowed — Want to move to a different cabin? You can request it.
- ✨ Date changes allowed — Outside of 45 days before sailing, under standard policies.
- ✨ Fellow Sailor name changes — Travelers 2-4 can change until 48 hours before sailing.
- ✨ Future Voyage Credit — If you need to cancel, you’re eligible for FVC under standard policies.
The One Catch
The lead Sailor (person who booked) cannot change their name. This is a change from the legacy system. If the primary booker can’t sail, you’ll need to work with your travel advisor on solutions.
💡 Pro Tip from Your Gold Tier First Mate
If you’re traveling with friends and there’s any uncertainty about who might make the trip, strategically choose which traveler is the “lead Sailor.” Pick the person with the most stable schedule and certain availability. This simple choice can save significant headaches later.
Premium Fare: Maximum Freedom & Perks
Who It’s For
Premium is for Sailors who want everything: maximum flexibility, the best WiFi, earliest dining access (for non-suite guests), daily Bar Tab credits, and priority support. This is the closest experience to suite-level perks without booking a RockStar cabin.
What You Get
- ✨ Premium WiFi — TWO devices per Sailor. Streaming capability. Video calls. Up to 5x faster than Classic. Perfect for remote workers or content creators.
- ✨ 60-day dining reservation window — The best window available for non-suite Sailors. Previously reserved only for RockStar guests!
- ✨ $15 Bar Tab per Sailor per night — On a 7-night cruise, that’s $105 per person, $210 per cabin. Real money toward cocktails, lattes, and more.
- ✨ Priority support line — Dedicated pre-voyage phone support for booking questions and changes.
- ✨ Cabin confirmed and guaranteed at booking — Your selected cabin is locked in.
- ✨ Cabin changes allowed — Full flexibility to relocate if you want.
- ✨ ALL names can change — Even the lead Sailor, until 48 hours before sailing.
- ✨ Date changes allowed — Outside 45 days, under standard policies.
- ✨ Future Voyage Credit eligible — Standard cancellation policies apply.
🍸 The Bar Tab Math: Is Premium Worth It?
Let’s break down the Premium Bar Tab value:
5-night voyage: $75/person = $150/cabin
7-night voyage: $105/person = $210/cabin
14-night voyage: $210/person = $420/cabin
If you typically purchase a Bar Tab, Premium fare may actually cost less than Essential + Bar Tab combined. Do the math for your specific voyage.

Complete Fare Type Comparison Table
Here’s the full breakdown in one easy-to-reference table:

Real-World Scenarios: Which Fare Makes Sense?
Scenario 1: The Celebratory Couple 💑
Situation: Jake and Maria are booking their 10th anniversary cruise 8 months in advance. They’ve requested time off work, flights are booked, and nothing is going to stop them.
Recommendation: Even with certainty, I’d recommend Essential at minimum. Why? The 45-day dining window lets them book The Wake for their anniversary dinner at a reasonable time. The Base fare’s 15-day window might leave them eating at 5:30 PM or 9:30 PM. Plus, with Base fare, that perfect aft cabin with the anniversary view could be reassigned by Virgin up to 7 days before sailing. For a milestone celebration, guaranteed cabin and dining matter.
Scenario 2: The Remote Worker 💻
Situation: Alexis works remotely and wants to “work from sea” during a Mediterranean voyage. She needs reliable WiFi for video calls and file uploads.
Recommendation: Premium is non-negotiable. Basic WiFi (Base) won’t support video calls. Classic WiFi (Essential) might struggle with large files. Premium’s two-device, streaming-capable WiFi is essential for remote work. Plus, the Bar Tab helps offset coffee costs for those early morning meetings.
Scenario 3: The Group Trip Organizer 👥
Situation: Trevor is booking a 10-person group trip for his 40th birthday, sailing in 10 months. He knows at least 2-3 people might need to swap out based on work schedules.
Recommendation: Essential at minimum for all cabins. Base would be a disaster — when one person can’t make it, you can’t substitute anyone. With Essential, fellow Sailors can change until 48 hours before. For Trevor’s own cabin, Premium is smart since he’s the organizer and lead Sailor — if something happens to him, Premium allows lead Sailor name changes.
Scenario 4: The Last-Minute Planner 🎯
Situation: Dana books cruises 30-45 days out when she can find deals. She’s flexible and spontaneous.
Recommendation: Base might actually work here — if you’re booking 30 days out and sailing in 15 days, your dining window opens immediately anyway. The restrictions matter less for last-minute bookings. The cabin reassignment risk is also lower with a shorter booking window. But honestly? Even here, the price difference to Essential is usually worth the security of cancellation options.
The Expert’s Verdict: My Honest Recommendation
After analyzing every detail of VoyageFair Choices, here’s my unfiltered advice as your Gold Tier First Mate:
🏆 The CamJon Travel Recommendation
For Most Sailors: Essential Fare
Essential delivers the flexibility you need without premium pricing. The 45-day dining window is reasonable, your selected cabin is guaranteed (no surprise reassignments!), you can adjust plans if life happens, and you get Future Voyage Credit protection. It’s the right balance for 80%+ of travelers.
For Longer Voyages or Drink Lovers: Premium Fare
On voyages 7+ nights, run the Bar Tab numbers. Premium’s $15/night credit often makes the upgrade cost-neutral. Add in the 60-day dining window (prime times for The Wake!), Premium WiFi, and full name-change flexibility, and Premium frequently becomes the smart choice.
Base Fare? Proceed with Extreme Caution
I rarely recommend Base unless you’re booking within 30 days of sailing. The savings typically aren’t worth the risk of a non-refundable, non-changeable booking, a severely limited dining window, and the possibility that Virgin could reassign your carefully selected cabin up to 7 days before departure. Life is unpredictable. Your cruise investment should have some protection.
A Note About RockStar & Mega RockStar Suites
VoyageFair Choices does not apply to suites. If you’re booking a RockStar or Mega RockStar Quarter, you receive full flexibility and your dining reservations open at 120 days — the earliest window available. Suite guests also enjoy Richard’s Rooftop access, RockStar Agent service, and curated in-room bars.
