Dinner Before Scarlet Night: How to Enjoy Both on Virgin Voyages
By Cameron DeJong · Sources checked October 16, 2026

You have a dinner reservation you are excited about. Then you realize it falls on Scarlet Night. Before giving up the meal, look at how the whole evening fits together.
I want you to enjoy dinner, and I also think being there for the beginning of Scarlet Night is an important part of the experience. My advice is to reach the Roundabout by 8 PM. That is my personal planning preference, not an official start time for every voyage.
Can you enjoy dinner before Scarlet Night? Yes, if the timing works. Check your sailing’s actual lineup, choose when you want to arrive, and work backward. In my experience, Test Kitchen and Gunbae usually take 1½–2 hours and can sometimes run to three. Leave time to change and walk, and tell your server your plans when you sit down.
Start with the beginning of Scarlet Night
Scarlet Night is more than the pool party. Virgin describes a shipwide celebration on Decks 6 and 7, followed by a pool-deck finale on Deck 15 when weather allows. Its guidance is to meet at the Roundabout on Deck 6 or 7 at the event’s start. Once onboard, check Discover → Lineup in the Virgin Voyages App for your sailing’s schedule. See Virgin’s entertainment FAQ.
The beginning is the part I want you to make room for. As I explained in my September newsletter, I recommend planning around an 8 PM arrival. Use the actual lineup as you organize the evening; if the posted activities start earlier, adjust your dinner plan accordingly.
Decide what matters most to you and your companions before the night arrives. If a leisurely dinner is your priority, choose that deliberately. If you want to be there as Scarlet Night gets going, protect time for it.
Work backward from your arrival target
In my experience, Test Kitchen and Gunbae usually take 1½–2 hours and can sometimes run to three. Other reserved restaurants usually take about 1–1½ hours. Those are my observations from sailing, not Virgin’s official meal durations.
When I say to give dinner at least an hour, that is my general planning minimum. It does not mean an hour is enough for Test Kitchen or Gunbae. A 7:30 PM reservation leaves just 30 minutes before my 8 PM arrival target, which is not a realistic plan for either of those meals.
Include the whole evening in your calculation: being seated, enjoying dinner, any cabin stop, and the walk to the Roundabout. Time between two calendar entries is not all available for eating.
| Dinner begins | Time until 8 PM | What that leaves you |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30 PM | 150 minutes | A two-hour dinner would leave 30 minutes for the walk and any cabin stop. A three-hour meal would run past the target. |
| 6:30 PM | 90 minutes | A 90-minute dinner would use the entire window, leaving no transition time. Look earlier or choose a different evening if arriving by 8 matters to you. |
| 7:30 PM | 30 minutes | Choose a different dinner plan if an 8 PM arrival is your priority. Do not expect a reserved dinner to fit this gap. |
These examples use my 8 PM arrival preference. They are arithmetic examples, not available reservation times, an official event schedule, or promised meal lengths.

Tell your server when you sit down
Share your plan at the beginning, while there is time to discuss what is realistic. You can say:
“We’re excited for dinner and hoping to reach the Roundabout by 8. Does that timing work for this meal?”
Then listen to the answer. Your server may be able to help with pacing. If the plan is too tight, it is better to learn that early than spend dinner watching the clock.
Platinum Tier Tip: Have this conversation with your tablemates, too. One person may be imagining a long dinner while another wants to change into red and head straight to the festivities. Agree on the plan before you order.
If dinner is too late, compare alternatives
Look at the available alternatives before cancelling the reservation you have. An earlier table, a different restaurant, or another evening might let you enjoy both experiences. Be ready with more than one time or restaurant that would work for you.
Before sailing, Virgin’s dining FAQ points to the app, My Account, or your First Mate for reservations. Once onboard, use the app’s Planner to manage changes, or ask a restaurant for help. Check the date, time, restaurant, and party size when confirming a change. A waitlist or hoped-for opening is not a confirmed table.
If your first choice is unavailable, our guide to sold-out dining reservations covers the wider planning problem.
A casual dinner can also be a good choice for this particular night. Check which venues are open when you need them, then save the meal you want to linger over for an evening with fewer competing plans.
Leave time to change, meet up, and walk
If a cabin stop would make the schedule tight, consider wearing your evening outfit to dinner. Virgin encourages red for Scarlet Night and welcomes casual and elegant choices. You do not need a formal costume. Read the official clothing guidance.
Choose a meeting place with your companions before you split up. Allow time for the walk from dinner and any change of clothes. A little room between plans is more pleasant than trying to make everything happen at the same minute.
For attire and the bigger picture, our Virgin Voyages theme-night guide covers Scarlet Night alongside the other evenings you may want to plan around.
I would rather see you enjoy a dinner you were looking forward to with a realistic plan for afterward. Give the meal room, share your timing early, and leave space for the beginning of the night.
