Virgin Voyages Cabin Upgrades: The Truth About Level Upgrade Bidding

You booked your Virgin Voyages cruise. You are already picturing the ocean views, the included dining, the red hammock, the entertainment, and the adults-only energy. Then the thought arrives: What if I could level this up?

Maybe you booked an Insider and now wish you had a Sea Terrace. Maybe you are in a Sea Terrace and keep wondering about an XL Sea Terrace. Maybe the RockStar life is whispering your name.

That is where Virgin Voyages’ Level Upgrade program comes in. It allows eligible Sailors to submit an offer to upgrade from the cabin category they originally booked into a higher cabin category. If Virgin accepts the offer, the card on file is charged and the upgrade is processed. If the offer is not accepted, the original booking stays as-is and there is no upgrade charge.

As a Top 100 First Mate North America 2025 (Gold Tier trained), CamJon Travel coaches Sailors through these decisions all the time. The most important thing to understand is this: Level Upgrade can be a bonus path, but it should not be the foundation of your vacation strategy.

What Is Virgin Voyages Level Upgrade?

Level Upgrade is Virgin Voyages’ cabin upgrade bidding program. Eligible Sailors can check whether their booking qualifies, select one or more higher cabin categories, and submit an offer for how much they are willing to pay in addition to the cruise fare already booked.

Your offer is an incremental amount per cabin. One Offeror submits for the cabin (binding everyone on that booking). You may place offers on multiple eligible categories, but only one accepted offer is charged if more than one clears.

Virgin describes the process simply: check eligibility, place an offer, and wait for the answer in your inbox. Most responses are accepted approximately 48 hours before sailing, although timing can vary. You may modify or cancel an unaccepted offer until 72 hours before sail.

If the offer is accepted, your booking is moved into the upgraded category and your payment method is charged. If the offer is not accepted, you are not charged and your original booking remains the same.

How Does the Virgin Voyages Level Upgrade Process Work?

1. Check your eligibility. You may receive an email invitation, or you can check eligibility on Virgin Voyages’ Level Upgrade page using your last name and booking ID.
2. Review the categories shown. The system will display the cabin categories you are eligible to bid on. These may vary by sailing and availability.
3. Submit an offer. Your bid is the additional amount you are willing to pay per cabin for the upgrade opportunity. Submitting places a $1 authorization hold on the card; it is released when the offer succeeds or fails.
4. Wait for a response. Most accepted offers are processed close to sailing, often around 48 hours prior. Until then (and until 72 hours before sail if still unaccepted), you can usually modify or cancel.
5. If accepted, the charge is automatic. The card on file is charged and the booking is moved into the upgraded cabin category. The charge may appear as Plusgrade on your statement—that is normal.
6. If rejected, nothing changes. Your original cabin and fare remain in place, and you are not charged for the unsuccessful bid.

Payment notes Sailors miss: Future Voyage Credits (FVC) cannot pay the Offer—credit/debit cards only. If you bought Voyage Protection through Virgin, you pay the incremental protection amount on an accepted bid. Flexpay Sailors who win an upgrade re-apply for a new Flexpay loan for the upgraded booking (per Virgin’s cabin-upgrades FAQ).

Are You Bidding on a Category or a Specific Cabin?

This is the part that matters most.

When you bid through Level Upgrade, you are not choosing a specific cabin number, deck, side of the ship, balcony type, view, or location. You are bidding for a cabin category. If your offer is accepted, Virgin assigns the cabin within that upgraded category based on availability.

That means you could win the category you wanted but not necessarily the location, view, balcony setup, or exact cabin experience you would have chosen yourself.

Bookings traveling together are assessed individually. Even if multiple cabins win upgrades, Virgin does not guarantee those upgraded cabins will be nearby.

This is why CamJon Travel is careful with upgrade advice. If you care deeply about being midship, avoiding motion, staying near elevators, avoiding noisy areas, staying near family, or keeping a specific deck, an upgrade bid may not be the right strategy.

How Much Should You Bid for a Virgin Voyages Cabin Upgrade?

There is no universal magic number.

Virgin does not publish a formula for what makes one Level Upgrade offer win and another lose. The result can depend on availability, sailing demand, how many Sailors are bidding, how close the ship is to sailing, and how many cabins Virgin is willing to release into the upgrade pool.

That is why the best question is not, “What is the cheapest bid that might win?”

The better question is:

“At this price, would I still be happy if Virgin accepted the offer and assigned me any cabin in that upgraded category?”

If the answer is no, the bid is probably not worth placing. CamJon Travel does not invent win rates or “magic” bid amounts—we coach Sailors against live inventory and their own risk tolerance.

When Does a Level Upgrade Bid Make Sense?

A Virgin Voyages Level Upgrade bid can be a smart move when:

• You would genuinely enjoy the upgraded category.
• You are comfortable not choosing the exact cabin location.
• The bid amount feels reasonable compared with a confirmed cabin change when your fare allows changes (Essential/Premium with inventory)—or when a change is not an option (Base / Lock It In), the bid still feels fair for the uncertainty.
• You are not depending on the upgrade for your vacation to feel successful.
• You would be happy keeping your original cabin if the bid does not clear.

For example, if you booked an Insider and would love a Sea View or Sea Terrace but are still happy with the cruise either way, Level Upgrade can be a fun opportunity.

If you booked a Sea Terrace and would love an XL Sea Terrace for the larger bathroom and slightly improved storage, the bid can be worth considering if the price feels fair and there is availability.

If you are hoping to jump into RockStar, Mega RockStar, or other suite inventory (including Massive when it appears as eligible), it can happen when inventory allows—but treat suite bids as competitive long shots unless availability is strong and the bid makes sense for your budget. If RockStar or Massive is essential to the trip, book it directly.

When Should You Be Careful About Bidding?

Level Upgrade is not always the right answer.

You should be cautious about bidding if:

• You need a specific cabin location.
• You are prone to motion sickness and want a carefully selected midship cabin.
• You are traveling with other cabins and want to stay near each other (together-cabin upgrades are not guaranteed nearby).
• You would be upset with a forward, aft, lower-deck, restricted-view, metal balcony, or otherwise less ideal assignment.
• You specifically want a Sea Terrace with the classic Virgin Voyages hammock experience.
• The minimum bid is already close to what a confirmed change would cost and your fare allows cabin changes.
• The bid amount feels too high for something that is not guaranteed.

This is where real advising matters. I have told Sailors not to chase an upgrade bid when the minimum price felt too high. I have also advised Sailors to compare the bid against the cost of changing into a confirmed cabin—but only when Essential or Premium (or another changeable fare) actually allows it. Base and Lock It In Sailors cannot “just change cabins now.” Sometimes the better move is to wait. Sometimes the better move is a confirmed change (if allowed). Sometimes the better move is to keep the cabin you already have and enjoy the voyage.

Can You Bid on Multiple Cabin Categories?

Yes, the Level Upgrade system may allow you to place offers on multiple eligible categories at the same time. Only one accepted offer is charged for the cabin.

That can improve your chances of receiving some kind of upgrade, but it also means you need to be comfortable with each category you bid on. Do not bid on a category just because it is available. Bid only on categories you would actually be happy receiving.

For example, you may be willing to bid on an XL Sea Terrace and a Seriously Suite, but not on a Limited View Sea Terrace if the view or location would disappoint you.

The best bid strategy is not always “bid on everything.” The best strategy is “bid only on outcomes you would be happy to receive.”

Does Level Upgrade Include Extra Promotions?

Virgin’s Level Upgrade terms say that promotions associated with the original booking remain in effect, but the upgrade does not add additional promotions that would have applied if you had originally booked the higher category.

In plain English: if your bid is accepted, you get the upgraded cabin category, but you should not assume the upgrade gives you every possible promotional perk that might have been attached to booking that category from the beginning.

However, Virgin’s terms also state that a successful upgrade from a cabin to a suite entitles the Sailor to the amenities a suite holder enjoys onboard.

Because fare rules and promotional rules can be nuanced, this is something CamJon Travel reviews carefully when coaching Sailors. Start with Base vs Essential vs Premium so you know what VoyageFair Choice you are carrying into the bid.

What Happens to VoyageFair Choice If My Bid Wins?

Under the Level Upgrade terms (effective October 7, 2025), your original VoyageFair Choice travels with you when you win a bid into a higher standard cabin category. Example: Base Insider → Central Sea Terrace stays Base (same VoyageFair policies/perks on the new category).

Exception: If you bid into RockStar or Mega RockStar, suite policies and perks replace your original VoyageFair Choice. That is a different product—not “Base with a nicer door.”

Lock It In remains a separate GTY product, not a fourth VoyageFair peer. Do not treat Level Upgrade as a rescue plan for a fare or cabin you already dislike.

What About Lock It In Fares and Level Upgrade?

Lock It In fares can be tempting because the upfront price may be lower. But the tradeoff is important: you give up control over the exact cabin assignment, and cabin changes are not allowed after booking (same hard rule as Base under Choosing Your Cabin).

That matters because many Sailors look at Level Upgrade as a way to “fix” a cabin choice later. I do not recommend thinking that way.

A Lock It In fare may be valid if your priority is the lowest available price and you are comfortable with Virgin assigning the cabin later. But if your priority is location, comfort, motion control, or certainty, a more controlled cabin choice—usually Essential or Premium with a selected cabin—is often the better path.

How Does CamJon Travel Coach Level Upgrade Bids?

Here is how we approach Virgin Voyages upgrade coaching for our Sailors—as a Top 100 First Mate North America 2025 practice, not a “bid formula.”

1. Start with the cabin you already have

Before talking about bids, we look at whether your current cabin is actually a good fit. If you already have a well-located cabin, it may not be worth risking an unknown assignment in a higher category.

2. Compare the bid against a direct cabin change—only if your fare allows it

Sometimes the bid looks attractive. Other times the minimum bid is so high that it makes more sense to price a direct change into the cabin category you actually want—when Essential or Premium inventory allows a change.

If you are on Base or Lock It In, cabin changes are not allowed. We do not tell those Sailors to “just change cabins now.” For them, the real comparison is keep-as-is vs bid (or a full rebook when that is the better tool).

If the upgrade bid is expensive and uncertain, and a confirmed cabin change is available on your fare, the change may be the smarter move.

3. Review live inventory where possible

CamJon Travel can often review current cabin availability for a sailing. That context matters.

If there are many cabins available in a category, a bid may be more realistic. If a category is sold out or nearly sold out, the bid may be a long shot unless cancellations or inventory shifts happen.

4. Decide what you are willing to accept

Would you be happy with any cabin in the upgraded category? Would you be okay losing your current cabin location? Would the upgrade still feel worth it if the cabin is not exactly where you hoped?

If you hesitate on those questions, bidding may not be the right move.

5. Keep your expectations grounded

There are zero guarantees. A smart bid can still lose. A low bid can sometimes win. Inventory can change. Demand can change. The only guaranteed cabin is the one that is actually confirmed on your booking.

Should You Bid the Minimum?

Sometimes a low bid is all a Sailor is comfortable with, and that is okay. But bidding the minimum should not be treated as a strategy that guarantees anything.

If you do bid, choose a number you can live with. Some Sailors prefer to go slightly above the minimum so they are not sitting at the lowest possible offer. That can be reasonable, but it still does not guarantee success.

The goal is not to “beat the system.” The goal is to submit an offer that feels fair for the experience you might receive.

Can You Upgrade to RockStar or Mega RockStar Through Level Upgrade?

Yes, suite upgrades can be possible through Level Upgrade when eligible inventory exists. Virgin’s cabin hierarchy includes RockStar and Mega RockStar—and suite bids (including Massive when it appears as eligible) still depend on inventory and sailing. Suite bids remain category-not-cabin: Virgin assigns within the won category.

That said, RockStar, Mega RockStar, and Massive inventory are often limited and highly desired. They can sell out far in advance, and even when they appear in the bidding tool, that does not mean an upgrade is likely. Treat them as competitive long shots.

If the RockStar or Massive experience is central to your vacation, the best strategy is to book it directly when it is available and the price works. If you would simply enjoy it as a bonus, then a Level Upgrade bid can be worth considering. Remember the VoyageFair exception: a won RockStar / Mega bid replaces your original VoyageFair Choice with suite policies and perks.

What Are Smart Level Upgrade Bid Examples?

Insider to Sea Terrace

This can be a great upgrade path if having outdoor space would genuinely improve the voyage. But it is not as simple as “bid for a Sea Terrace and get the perfect balcony.” If your bid is accepted, you could be assigned a cabin in that upgraded category that has a restricted view, a less desirable location, a louder area of the ship, or even a balcony setup that does not include the classic Virgin Voyages hammock.

That does not mean the bid is bad. It just means you need to understand what you are actually accepting. If the bid minimum is high and your fare allows cabin changes (Essential/Premium), compare it against the cost to change directly into a confirmed Sea Terrace or Central Sea Terrace where the cabin location can be chosen more intentionally. Base and Lock It In Sailors cannot use that “change now” path.

Sea Terrace to XL Sea Terrace

This can make sense if the price is reasonable, but it is important to understand what the XL Sea Terrace actually gives you. The main upgrade is the larger bathroom, especially the larger shower. You may also get slightly more storage space. The common misconception is that the cabin itself is meaningfully larger—but the room is not really the upgrade here. The balcony is not larger either.

That is why I would not bid on an XL Sea Terrace just because the name sounds like a much bigger cabin. The real question is whether the larger bathroom and slightly improved storage are worth the bid amount to you.

You also still are not choosing the specific cabin. Depending on the ship and available inventory, an accepted bid could place you in an XL Sea Terrace with a metal balcony and no hammock. For some Sailors, that tradeoff is completely fine because the bathroom matters more. For others, losing the classic hammock experience would be disappointing. That is exactly why the bid should be based on what you would actually be happy receiving, not just the category name.

Sea Terrace to RockStar (or other suite inventory)

This is exciting but competitive. Treat it as a bonus opportunity, not a plan. If the suite experience is central to your vacation—including Massive when that is the goal—booking it directly is the safer strategy. If you would simply love it as an extra surprise, then a bid may be worth considering when the price feels right and eligible inventory exists.

Lock It In to a Higher Category

Be careful. The lower upfront price may be attractive, but cabin control and flexibility matter. Lock It In is GTY with no cabin changes—Level Upgrade is not a rescue plan for a cabin or fare choice you are not comfortable with.

What’s the Smart Way to Think About Level Upgrade?

Virgin Voyages Level Upgrade can be exciting. It can also be misunderstood.

The best strategy is not to chase every possible upgrade. The best strategy is to understand what you are bidding on, what you are giving up, and whether the possible outcome is actually worth the price.

If you are flexible, comfortable with uncertainty, and happy with your original cabin either way, Level Upgrade can be a fun opportunity.

If you need certainty, a specific cabin location, or a particular experience, it is usually better to work with an expert First Mate and secure the right cabin directly—especially if RockStar or Massive is non-negotiable.
