Staying Onboard on a Virgin Voyages Port Day: Make Time to Enjoy the Ship

The ship arrives, the gangway opens, and everyone seems to be discussing where they are going. You look at your book, your breakfast, and the view from the deck and think: today, this might be enough.

Staying onboard during a Virgin Voyages port call can be a lovely way to use part of your vacation. Perhaps you have visited before. Perhaps the previous day was wonderfully busy. Or perhaps enjoying the ship was one of the reasons you booked it.

Decide what you want from this port day

Before choosing the ship, ask what drew you to this port. If it is a destination you have wanted to visit for years, a manageable half-day ashore may be more satisfying than skipping it entirely. If nothing on land interests you this time, forcing an excursion into the day may add effort without adding much enjoyment.

Consider your energy across the whole itinerary. Three ambitious sightseeing days in a row can feel very different from one favorite excursion with breathing room on either side. Plan the cruise you want to come home having experienced.

Staying aboard is normally an option during an ordinary port call, but follow any required immigration, clearance, or crew instructions for your sailing. A turnaround day between consecutive cruises can involve different procedures.

Check what is actually happening onboard

Virgin confirms that it offers onboard programming while the ship is in port. The daily app lineup is the place to see what is happening on your particular day. That does not mean a port-day schedule will match a sea day. Check Virgin’s entertainment FAQ.

Food is available, but plan around limited restaurant hours

Restaurant hours are limited on port days, so check the app before building your afternoon around a long lunch. You can still have a lovely, unhurried meal; the trick is choosing an open venue and going during its service window.

Keep Grounds Club in mind for a lighter stop. The coffee shop is open on port days, with muffins and other small bites that can be just right between meals. Check that day’s hours and counter selection, then settle in with a coffee and your book.

Check the lineup before choosing your afternoon

If an activity needs a booking, secure it rather than assuming there will be space because other Sailors are ashore.

Be especially careful with a plan built around the casino: Virgin’s published operating guidance ties casino games to sailing in international waters. Do not make gambling your main plan for the hours docked in port. The same entertainment FAQ explains that distinction.

A quieter ship is a possibility, not a booking benefit. Other travelers may have the same idea, and weather or changes ashore can bring more people back. Choose activities you would enjoy even if the deck is pleasantly busy.

Make time for the spa or another favorite

Perhaps it is an unhurried meal. Perhaps it is finally reading more than three pages at once. Or perhaps you want a spa visit without fitting it between a tour and dinner.

Ask about the port-day spa offers

We’ve often seen excellent spa discounts on port days. If a massage or another treatment is on your wish list, this can be a particularly good time to enjoy it. Ask the Redemption Spa team what port-day specials they are offering on your voyage and which appointments qualify.

Compare the treatment, duration, and total price before booking. Offers vary by sailing and availability, so we would not promise a particular discount or assume that every service is part of the special.

Once you have found an offer you like, confirm the appointment and cancellation terms. Then let the rest of the day stay easy: a book, a comfortable seat, and a meal or coffee stop fitted around the opening hours.

Try a loose plan with plenty of space

Here is a sample structure to adapt once you have checked the day’s hours:

• Breakfast without a departure deadline. Choose an open breakfast venue, or keep it light with coffee and a muffin at Grounds Club during its service hours.
• One highlight. A workout, an available class, a spa appointment booked with a port-day offer, or a walk around the open decks.
• Lunch within the service window, then an open afternoon. Check the restaurant hours first. For a smaller snack, see what Grounds Club has at the counter. Read, rest, or explore a part of the ship you have barely used.
• An easy transition into the evening. Leave enough time to get ready for dinner without turning the afternoon into another countdown.

This is an example of pacing, not an official activity timetable. Move the pieces around. If breakfast turns into a long conversation and you never open the book, the plan has not failed.

A short visit ashore can work, too

The choice does not always have to be a full excursion or a full day on the ship. Depending on the port, transport, access, and timing, a short outing may leave you with much of the afternoon onboard.

Work backward from the posted all-aboard time and check the practical journey both ways. A place that looks close on a map can take longer to reach when shuttles or tenders are involved. Read the port instructions before committing to a casual “we’ll just pop out.”

Check Virgin’s port guidance and the conditions for any excursion you have booked. The right option is the one that fits the amount of time and energy you actually want to spend.

Let your travel companion choose differently

If one of you wants to explore and the other wants to stay, make the reunion part of the plan. Agree on a dinner time or a place to meet, and make sure each person has the information they need.

That can give you something new to talk about over dinner. One person gets the destination they were excited about; the other gets the slower day they wanted. You are still taking the same vacation, even if your afternoon photographs look different.

Before canceling an existing excursion to stay onboard, review its cancellation terms. A relaxing day feels less relaxing when it comes with an unexpected charge.
