A Virgin Voyages Ship Sailed Into Today’s Total Eclipse. The Next One Is Already Bookable.

This afternoon, somewhere in the open water off western Iceland, a few thousand adults stood on the deck of Valiant Lady and watched the sun go out.

Today’s total solar eclipse crossed Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, and the greatest duration of totality anywhere on Earth fell not on land but in the ocean west of Iceland. Virgin Voyages planned for exactly that. Valiant Lady left Portsmouth on August 5 on a voyage built around these two minutes, and a ship, unlike a hotel, can position itself under the shadow and steer around the clouds.

Why a Ship Beats a Hotel for an Eclipse

Eclipse chasers have known this for decades, and today was the proof of concept in real time. Totality is a narrow ribbon on the map, and the single biggest threat to seeing it is a cloud you cannot do anything about. A hotel is a fixed point. If the weather over your fixed point turns, your once-in-a-lifetime moment becomes a dark overcast afternoon.

A ship moves. The captain has forecast data, a totality ribbon that is miles wide over open water, and engines. Today the longest totality on the planet was only reachable by boat, and the adults-only ship parked under it came with twenty-plus restaurants and a deck party attached.

The Next One: August 2, 2027, and Virgin Is Already Going

Next August, the moon does it again, and this one is the heavyweight. The August 2, 2027 total eclipse will deliver the longest totality on land since 1991, crossing southern Spain and North Africa. Astronomy publications have been calling it the eclipse of the decade.
