Virgin Voyages Is Sailing From Amsterdam in Summer 2028: Every Itinerary, Explained

Some announcements I cover because they matter to my Sailors. This one I get to cover because it matters to me. Amsterdam is one of our favorite places in the world, and for Summer 2028, Virgin Voyages is making it home.

For nearly two months across summer 2028, Valiant Lady will sail from Amsterdam on a Scandinavia and Baltics season: Norwegian fjords, an Arctic Circle run, a 12-night Baltic deep dive with a Stockholm overnight, and two Western Europe voyages connecting Amsterdam with Barcelona. Here is every sailing, what makes each one different, and how to be first in line when they open for booking.

Why Amsterdam Is a Big Deal

Virgin’s European seasons have historically revolved around the Mediterranean: Barcelona, Athens, the Adriatic. Beautiful, and we love them. But Northern Europe is a different kind of trip, and Amsterdam is one of the best home ports on the continent to build it around.

Here is the practical case. Amsterdam Schiphol is one of Europe’s biggest flight hubs, with nonstop service from a long list of US cities, which usually means better airfare and simpler connections than smaller embarkation ports. The cruise experience starts in a city that deserves two or three days on its own: canals, world-class museums, brown cafes, and neighborhoods that reward wandering. And Jonathan and I can tell you from experience that “we have to fly home tomorrow” is the hardest sentence to say in Amsterdam. In 2028, you will not have to. You can walk from the canal ring to your ship.

Why This Season Is Built Different

Virgin’s own positioning for this season is blunt: this is the only adults-only cruise of its kind in Northern Europe. The region’s cruise market splits into two camps, family megaships running the standard Oslo, Bergen, Copenhagen circuit, and quiet expedition lines at a much higher price. This season threads that gap, and four details prove it.

• The ship stays out late. Most lines in Northern Europe sail away between 5 and 7pm. Per Virgin’s launch materials, Copenhagen is scheduled to hold until 10pm on the Baltic sailing and 11pm on the Hamburg run, with Hamburg scheduled until nearly midnight, and overnights in Stockholm, arriving through the archipelago and staying until the next afternoon. Dinner in the city, the show after, and the ship waits for you.
• Right-sized for the real fjords. At roughly 2,770 Sailors, Valiant Lady is small enough to reach intimate ports like Nordfjordeid and Åndalsnes that bigger ships cannot. That is how this map includes 15 ports new to Virgin, with a maiden call on every single voyage.
• Included where it counts. Northern Europe port days are long and expensive, so fixed onboard costs matter more here than almost anywhere the line sails. Specialty dining, WiFi, tips, soda and water are built into the fare, which Virgin pegs at over $1,000 in value.
• Adults-only, all the way to 71 degrees north. The Arctic sailing brings a crossing ceremony and a deck party above the Circle. Expedition lines go north quietly, and family lines mostly do not go this far at all.

Every Itinerary, Explained

The bookends: Barcelona to Amsterdam, and back (10 nights each)

The season opens and closes with two Western Europe voyages that connect Virgin’s Mediterranean world to its new northern one. Both include an overnight in Lisbon, one of Europe’s most underrated capitals, plus a taste of North Africa: Casablanca on the northbound run, Tangier on the southbound. These are the itineraries for Sailors who want maximum variety per night: three or four countries, two seas, and an overnight that lets you actually have dinner and a night out in Lisbon instead of sprinting back to the ship.

The deep dive: 12 nights, Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight

This is the one that made me sit up. Twelve nights, six ports across five countries beyond the Netherlands, and an overnight in Stockholm, arriving through the archipelago at golden hour. Copenhagen holds the ship until 10pm, Gdańsk is a port most mainstream lines skip entirely, and Berlin is reachable by train from the Warnemünde call. Baltic itineraries this complete are rare on any line, let alone on an adults-only ship. If you are the Sailor who collects ports and wants Scandinavia and the Baltic done properly in one trip, this is it.

The classic: 7 nights, Norwegian Fjords

Molde, Nordfjordeid, Flåm, Bergen. Flåm alone is worth the trip: a village at the end of a narrow fjord arm, home to one of the world’s most scenic railway rides. This is the shortest, most focused way to see the fjords with Virgin, and I expect it to be the season’s fastest seller.

The city sampler: 7 nights, Scandinavia & Hamburg

Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg in a single week, and the clock is the story: Copenhagen keeps the ship until 11pm and Hamburg until 11:59pm, which turns port days into port nights. Three big, walkable, personality-heavy cities with sea days to recover in between. If your idea of a great port day is a great neighborhood, coffee, and a museum rather than a mountain, this one is yours.

The bucket-list run: 11 nights, Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords

The headliner. Valiant Lady crosses the Arctic Circle and sails to Tromsø and Honningsvåg, the little harbor town at 71 degrees north that serves as the gateway to North Cape, the top of Europe. It is the furthest north Virgin has ever sailed, marked with an Arctic Circle crossing ceremony and a deck party above the Circle. Add Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Olden, and Bergen and you have one of the most ambitious itineraries Virgin has ever put on paper. Late August this far north means long, golden evenings and landscapes that do not look real. This is the one people will frame photos of.

• First time cruising Europe? Start with a 7-night: Norwegian Fjords for scenery, Scandinavia & Hamburg for cities.
• Been to the Med, want something new? The 12-night Baltic is the itinerary you have not done yet.
• Chasing a bucket-list trip? The 11-night Arctic Circle voyage. There is nothing else like it on Virgin’s map.
• Want Europe plus a passport stamp surprise? The Barcelona bookends add Morocco and an overnight in Lisbon.

Booking Status, and How to Get First Pick
