The Partnership Voyage: The Southern Caribbean Sailing Where I Can Hand You Names

One of my favorite things Virgin Voyages does is team up with locals in every port. It’s right there on their itinerary pages, and it’s real. We’ve spent years quietly doing the same thing, one relationship at a time. This is the sailing where those two lists overlap best: the one Southern Caribbean itinerary where, in almost every port, I can hand you a name we actually know.

The sailing: Southern Caribbean & Aruban Nights

Seven nights on Valiant Lady, round-trip from San Juan, and the ship docks in the heart of Old San Juan, so even embarkation day feels like a port day. The shape of the week on Virgin’s current lineup: a sea day to settle in, then Willemstad, Curaçao and Oranjestad, Aruba back-to-back (the order flips on some dates), another sea day, then St. John’s, Antigua and Philipsburg, St. Maarten before sailing home.

Now, the detail hiding in the name. “Aruban Nights” isn’t marketing garnish. On many of these sailings, one of the ABC ports gets a genuinely late stay. Recent timetables show evenings like 9 AM to 10 PM in Aruba on some dates, while other dates hand the long evening to Curaçao instead. Either way, that’s a full beach day, a proper dinner ashore, and cocktails under a Caribbean night sky before you stroll back to the ship. Very few Caribbean itineraries even try to give you an island after dark. Just check which port gets the evening on your date, because it genuinely varies.

Two honest planning notes before we go port by port:

• Virgin runs a few variants of this route. Some sister sailings swap in St. Lucia; the 8-night version adds Bonaire and Martinique. Always confirm the exact port lineup and times for your date in the Virgin app. Never plan a port day off a blog post, including this one.
• Port times drive everything. Every recommendation below assumes you check your ship’s actual arrival and all-aboard times first. Our partners are cruise-aware and plan around them, but you should know them too.

Why I call it the Partnership Voyage

Most itineraries touch one of those relationships. This one strings several together in a single week, and it visits the island where our charitable giving lives, too.

🏝️ Willemstad, Curaçao, the crown jewel

Curaçao is where CamJon Travel’s story practically starts. It’s the island that made me fall in love with travel, the setting of our podcast’s very first episode, and the place where we’ve built more real relationships than anywhere else on the map.

Getting your bearings: ships dock at the Mega Pier in the Otrobanda quarter, which means you step off the gangway already in Willemstad. If you’ve ever wanted to learn, doing it in Curaçao with people we trust is about as good as a first time gets.

• Want structure and energy? Irie Tours, an established operator with cruise-visitor awareness: Klein Curaçao day trips, west-side beach hopping, snorkel-and-BBQ runs, sunset cruises.
• Want private, but flexible and family-run? Gone Caribe, custom island days that can mix Hato Caves, the turtles at Playa Piskado, north-coast wildness, hiking, beaches, and local culture in whatever ratio suits you.

And one more that matters to us: Rescue Paws Curaçao, the island dog rescue we donate to every quarter. One more Curaçao note: on some dates, Curaçao is the port that gets the late-evening stay. If yours is one of them, tell your guide when you book, Willemstad after dark, with the pontoon bridge lit up, is a different (and wonderful) island than the daytime version, and our partners can shape a day that saves something for the evening.

🌞 Oranjestad, Aruba, no partner yet, and that’s the honest answer

Aruba calls itself “One Happy Island,” and it earns it: famously reliable weather, uncrowded beaches, water so clear it looks retouched.

Do I have a trusted local partner there? Not yet. I won’t pretend otherwise, and I won’t hand you an unvetted name just to look connected. For Aruba, Virgin’s own Shore Things are a solid path, or keep it gloriously simple: Eagle Beach on your own is a world-class day that requires nothing but a taxi and sunscreen.

Here’s where a late departure changes the math, though. If your date gives Aruba the evening stay, many do; check the Virgin app for yours, you don’t have to choose between the beach and the evening. Spend the day in the water, come back to the ship to clean up, then head back out for dinner ashore and a slow walk through Oranjestad’s lit-up streets. It’s the rare port day that ends with stars instead of a sail-away.

If our Sailors keep coming back raving about the same Aruba guide, that’s usually how a partnership starts. Until then: honesty over inventory.

🏖️ St. John’s, Antigua, 365 beaches, zero pretense

Same honesty here: no CamJon partner in Antigua yet. What Antigua has instead is the famous claim of a beach for every day of the year, plus Fort Barrington if you like your lounging with a panoramic view and a little history. The ship docks right at St. John’s, so town, taxis, and beach days are all easy to reach. Shore Things or a well-reviewed beach day both work beautifully, and if you’re a CamJon Sailor, ask me before you sail and we’ll think through timing and fit together. That part’s always included.

💛 Philipsburg, St. Maarten, one name: Joyce

Four streets, each less than a mile long, and somehow one of the most exciting small towns in the Caribbean. In St. Maarten I don’t give you a list. I give you Joyce Prince.

Joyce builds days around you: shopping, beaches, culture, art galleries, local food, and the famous low-flying planes at Maho Beach. She plans accessibility-minded routes for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers. And she offers something almost nobody else does well: economical beach vow renewals, “say I love you once again on the beach in Paradise,” as she puts it. For couples and celebration groups, she’s a beautiful fit.

🤿 The 8-night version: add Bonaire and you’ve got the ABCs

Virgin also runs an 8-night sister sailing from San Juan that adds Kralendijk, Bonaire and Martinique to the Aruba to Curaçao spine. If you’re even a little bit of a diver or snorkeler, pay attention: Bonaire’s entire coastline is a protected marine park, and it’s one of the most beloved shore-diving destinations on the planet. Pair it with Curaçao, where The Dive Bus has you covered, and you’ve built a legitimate diving vacation inside an adults-only cruise, with white tablecloths waiting at dinner.

Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, the ABC islands, one sailing. If your dream Caribbean week is more reef than water slide, this is the version I’d point you to.

🧭 Which day is the right day? A quick fit check

The same philosophy that guides how we book cruises guides shore days: fit before fare, even on land. A quick self-test:

• “I want a story to tell.” Learn to dive with The Dive Bus, and let Turtle & Ray film it.
• “I want the island, not an itinerary.” Henry or Gone Caribe in Curaçao; Joyce in St. Maarten.

Any of those answers can be correct. The wrong answer is booking the most impressive-sounding tour and spending your port day wishing you’d picked the beach chair.
