Smart Sailor’s Guide: Calculate Your Perfect Virgin Voyages Bar Tab
Virgin Voyages famously ditched the traditional, often wasteful, all-inclusive drink packages for a more flexible “Bar Tab” system. It’s a brilliant concept: you pre-pay for onboard beverage credit and get a bonus on top from Virgin. But figuring out the right amount can feel like a high-stakes math problem. Buy too little, and you miss out on free bonus cash. Buy too much, and you risk leaving non-refundable credit behind.
As a Top 100 First Mate in North America, I’ve helped hundreds of sailors navigate this exact question. Forget the generic advice. We’re here to give you the insider strategy, demystify the system, and introduce the CamJon Travel Bar Tab Calculator—a tool designed to give you a smart, personalized recommendation.
Responsible Drinking Disclaimer
CamJon Travel does not endorse or encourage the consumption of alcohol. The information provided in this guide is for informational and planning purposes only. Alcohol affects individuals differently, and excessive consumption can be harmful to your health. Please drink responsibly and in moderation. You must be of legal drinking age to consume alcoholic beverages; the minimum age varies by ship location and itinerary (typically 21 for U.S. departures, 18 for select international sailings—check Virgin Voyages’ policy for your specific voyage). Never drink and drive, operate machinery, or engage in activities that require alertness after consuming alcohol. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have any health conditions, please consult your physician before consuming alcohol. By using this guide, you acknowledge that CamJon Travel assumes no liability for any decisions you make regarding alcohol consumption. Virgin Voyages reserves the right to refuse service to any guest.
First, How Does the Bar Tab Work?
The concept is simple and sailor-friendly. Before your cruise (up to 24 hours before sailing), you can purchase a Bar Tab in set amounts. For every amount you purchase, Virgin Voyages adds a bonus on top, giving you more spending power for premium beverages. For a full breakdown of what’s available at each bar and venue, check out our complete guide to Virgin Voyages bar and drink menus—featuring all the 2026 menus with current pricing.
Here are the current Bar Tab tiers, which offer up to a 25% bonus on your money:
| You Pay | Virgin Adds | Your Total Bar Tab | Bonus Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | $25 | $225 | 12.5% |
| $300 | $50 | $350 | 16.7% |
| $500 | $100 | $600 | 20% |
| $750 | $175 | $925 | 23.3% |
| $1000 | $250 | $1,250 | 25% |
This credit can be used for almost any premium beverage onboard and at The Beach Club at Bimini—from specialty coffees and fresh-pressed juices to craft cocktails, beers, and fine wines. Remember: at Bimini, only basic drinks (water, soda, tea) are included, so your Bar Tab is essential for enjoying cocktails at the Beach Club!
Bar Tab vs. Sailor Loot: The Ultimate Showdown
This is the most common point of confusion, so let’s clear it up. Think of them as two different types of onboard currency.
- Bar Tab: This is a dedicated, pre-purchased fund exclusively for premium drinks. It works onboard the ship AND at The Beach Club at Bimini.
- Sailor Loot: This is a more flexible onboard credit that can be used for almost everything else: Shore Things (if booked onboard), spa treatments, retail purchases, tattoos, and more.
Crucially, the ship’s payment system is set up in a hierarchy: When you buy a drink, it will automatically pull from your Bar Tab first. Once that’s depleted, it will then pull from any available Sailor Loot. This is why strategically purchasing a Bar Tab is so important—it protects your flexible Sailor Loot for other experiences.
Introducing the CamJon Travel Bar Tab Calculator
Other calculators make you guess your daily drink count. But vacation isn’t that predictable. Some days are for relaxing with a coffee; others are for poolside cocktails and sharing a SH-OCT-A-PUS with your crew at Loose Cannon. Our calculator is different. It’s based on Drinker Personas. Simply choose the profile that best fits your vibe for this trip, and let us do the math.

The Smart Sailor Strategy: Beyond the Numbers
The calculator gives you a fantastic baseline, but a true expert knows how to maximize every dollar. That’s where we come in.
The biggest mistake sailors make is thinking the Bar Tab is only for cocktails. Use it for your morning latte from the Grounds Club ($5-$6), a post-workout smoothie from Gym & Tonic ($11-$13), or a refreshing Red Bull ($7). These smaller purchases add up and are a great way to ensure you use all of your bonus credit.
If you are a Sea Rover or Sea Blazer, your bonus structure is different and much more valuable on the $300 tier ($100 and $125 bonus, respectively). In this case, it is almost always better to buy multiple $300 Bar Tabs instead of one larger one. For example, a Sea Blazer buying two $300 tabs ($600 total) gets a $250 bonus ($125 x 2), for a total of $850 to spend. If they bought a single $500 tab, they would only get a $100 bonus for a total of $600. That’s $250 more for the same money!
While the Bar Tab covers most drinks, it frustratingly cannot be used for some ticketed, alcohol-related events like the Grog Walk (the onboard pub crawl) or special mixology classes. These experiences must be paid for with Sailor Loot or your credit card, so plan accordingly. Book the Grog Walk and shows in the app as soon as you board—they fill up fast!
Your Bar Tab is non-refundable and expires on the final morning of your voyage, so you need a plan for any leftovers. On the last night, if you have credit to spare, live a little! Buy a round for new friends, try that top-shelf whiskey at On The Rocks (Macallan 18 Year is $78!), or ask about buying an unopened bottle of wine or spirits from The Wake on the final morning.
Your Bar Tab is linked to your Sailor Band, not to a specific cabin. This means you can treat your travel companions to drinks! At venues like Loose Cannon, group cocktails like the legendary SH-OCT-A-PUS ($45, serves 5) are perfect for using up Bar Tab credit while creating unforgettable memories with your crew.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Bar Tab always worth it?
For the vast majority of sailors, yes. Even the smallest $200 tab gives you a 12.5% instant return on your money. If you plan to buy even a few specialty coffees or a couple of cocktails, you’re essentially getting free money for something you were going to buy anyway. The only exception might be sailors who truly don’t drink anything beyond the included basics (drip coffee, tea, water, soda).
What happens if I don’t use all my Bar Tab?
Any unused Bar Tab credit (both what you paid for and the bonus) is not refundable at the end of the voyage. It’s a “use it or lose it” system, so be sure to check your balance in the app on the last day. See Platinum Tier Tip #4 above for ideas on using up remaining credit!
Can I change my mind after buying a Bar Tab?
Yes! You can cancel your Bar Tab for a full refund up to 24 hours before your voyage departs. This gives you flexibility if your plans change or if you realize you need to adjust your amount.
Can I buy a Bar Tab on the ship?
No. The Bar Tab and its valuable bonus are only available for pre-purchase up to 24 hours before you sail. You cannot buy one once you are onboard, though Virgin Voyages is rolling out the option to purchase at check-in at select terminals. Don’t risk it—buy before you sail!
Can I buy multiple Bar Tabs?
Yes! You can purchase multiple Bar Tabs, and this is actually the smart strategy for loyalty members (see Platinum Tier Tip #2). Each Bar Tab earns its own bonus, so stacking smaller tabs can sometimes yield more total credit than one large purchase.
Does the Bar Tab work at Bimini Beach Club?
Absolutely! Your Bar Tab works at The Beach Club at Bimini, and this is actually where it becomes essential. Unlike on the ship, Bimini only includes basic drinks (water, soda, tea)—alcohol is NOT included at the Beach Club. You’ll need Bar Tab credit (or to pay out of pocket) for cocktails, beer, and wine on the island.
Can I share my Bar Tab with someone else?
Yes! When you order drinks, they charge to your Sailor Band. You can absolutely buy drinks for others in your group. Just tap your band when paying for their order. This makes group cocktails and sharing rounds easy and seamless.
